How a season of Football Squares runs itself
One board, seventeen Monday nights, numbers drawn once on game day, and a fixed prize every paying quarter. Here are the rules it runs on.
Football Squares is the app my kids' hockey teams use for their fundraiser. One board, one season, and nothing for a volunteer to run by hand on a Monday night. Here's how it works.
One board for the whole season
A board is a 10 by 10 grid, and it plays 17 Monday night games. You buy a square once and it's yours all season.
- The home team's digits run across the top and the away team's run down the side.
- The last digit of each team's score picks the winning square.
- Each paying quarter is worth a fixed prize, the same every game. A quarter set to nothing pays nobody, so a board can pay only at the half and at the final whistle if that's what the team wants.
- What the team keeps is whatever the board brings in beyond the season's prizes. The app won't accept prizes that add up to more than a full board collects.
Numbers are drawn once
Digits are drawn on the morning of each game, one time. Nobody can redraw them, not a team admin and not me. The time of the draw is shown on the board, and the digits appear the moment they're drawn.
Squares stay on sale all season
A board doesn't close when the season starts. Someone who joins in week five plays every game from the next draw on.
- A square only plays a game if the team confirmed its payment before that game's digits were drawn.
- A square that was claimed before the draw but confirmed after it sits that game out. If its numbers hit, the prize stays with the team, the same as an unsold square.
- Sales close on their own when the hundredth square is paid for.
It keeps its own calendar
- The board opens on the current game. A Monday game stays current through Tuesday, so you can check results the next morning, and the board rolls forward on Wednesday.
- Results post the morning after the game, and a results email goes out with them.
- The admin screen says it plainly: numbers, scores and payouts run off the schedule, and nothing there needs a manual touch.
- The app keeps the standings and a running team fund.
