Live score, and the square that's winning right now
On game day a Football Squares board shows the score, lights up the square that's winning, and names a tentative winner as each quarter ends.
Squares is a game you watch. Until a quarter ends, everyone on the board is doing the same math in their head: what's the score, and whose square is that? The board does it for them.
What shows on game day
From game day until the official results post, the board has a live section.
- Before kickoff, it says when the game starts and that the winning square will light up once it does.
- During the game, it shows the score and the square that's winning right now, with the name of whoever holds it. That square pulses on the grid.
- As each quarter ends, it names a tentative winner for that quarter.
- A square that wins two quarters shows both labels.
Anyone can watch it, signed in or not. It refreshes on its own every 20 seconds during play, and it stops asking for updates while the tab is in the background.
Tentative means tentative
The live winners follow the same rules as the official ones.
- A quarter that doesn't pay on that board says so.
- If nobody bought the square the score lands on, it reads as an unsold square.
- A square only counts if it was confirmed before that game's numbers were drawn, exactly as in the official results.
- If the numbers haven't been drawn yet, it says that, too.
Nothing in the live view is saved, and nothing is emailed from it. The official results post the morning after the game, and those are the ones that pay. If the live score can't be reached for a moment, the board says so and tries again.
Two smaller things
- On a phone, the pay button opens your payment app directly.
- A payment handle has to be an actual username. A display name with spaces is refused when it's entered, so a prize doesn't go looking for an account that doesn't exist.
