Squares now lets families hold first and pay second

Hold squares before paying, fix a payment that came in short or over, take a square back, and tag each square to the player it's for.

Squares is the easiest fundraiser game to explain and the fiddliest to run. Families want the same handful of squares, they pay in different ways at different times, and somebody always sends the wrong amount. Here is how Locker Room Fund handles the buying side now.

Hold first, then pay

Choosing squares and paying for them are two separate steps.

  • A claim holds every square you picked that's still open. If someone took one of them a moment before you, that one is skipped and you keep the rest.
  • The pay step then covers exactly the squares you're holding. It shows the amount and the way to pay, and it's still there if you refresh the page.
  • Changed your mind? You can release any square the team hasn't confirmed yet.
  • One claim can hold up to 100 squares, which is the whole board.

When the payment doesn't match

Real payments are messy, so the admin confirming one has room to deal with it.

  • It came in short. Confirm the payment and keep only some of the held squares. The rest open back up.
  • It came in over. Add squares to match. The extra ones are picked at random from what's open.
  • A square needs to come back. An admin can take back a confirmed square, as long as it has never won and isn't in play for a game right now. Its price comes off the payment.

Either way, the payment records exactly which squares it covers. The confirmation email and the list of payments waiting on the admin show only squares that are still live.

Confirmed before the draw, or it waits a week

A square plays a given Monday only if the team confirmed it before that week's digits were drawn. A square confirmed after the draw starts with the next one. So nobody gets into a week after its numbers are out, and the page and the list of pending payments both say so.

Every square can carry a player's name

A team can keep a roster of the kids the fundraiser is for. A family buying squares can say which player they're for, and the admin page keeps a Raised by player tally. Tagging is optional. For a team that tracks fundraising per kid, that tally is the report somebody used to build by hand.

The season runs through week 17

The board plays every Monday night through week 17. Week 18 has no Monday night game, so there's no draw for it.
